 The Cat in the Hat puzzle - Answer

Age group: 6-12 years old

The question was:

Three hats have a sentence written on each of them:

Hat 1: The cat is in this hat

Hat 2: The cat is not in this hat

Hat 3: The cat is not in hat 1


If only one of these statements is correct, which hat is the cat in?

A) Hat 1

B) Hat 2

C) Hat 3

D) None of the hats

E) Not enough information

Now for the answer!

Let us take a step by step approach to solving this brain teaser.

Consider case 1:

The cat is in hat 1 -

Then for the statements given:

The cat is in this hat - becomes true

The cat is not in this hat - becomes true

The cat is not in hat 1 - becomes false

We observe that 2 statements are true, which is against the given condition. Thus, the cat is not in hat 1.

Case 2:

The cat is in hat 2 -

Then for the statements given: 

The cat is in this hat - becomes false

The cat is not in this hat - becomes false

The cat is not in hat 1 - becomes true

We observe that only 1 statement is true, which is as per the given condition. Thus, the cat is in hat 2.

We can now stop as we have arrived at the correct answer.

Thus, the correct answer is : 

B) Hat 2
