WERE ORIGINALLY PRESENT?

Hello everyone! Here is another interesting brainteaser for you!

"Three friends, Pierce, Quinton and Ronald, went camping. At night, after setting up camp, they went to bed. They had carried with them a box of oranges. 

During the night, Pierce woke up and decided to hide his share of oranges and hid a third, then promptly fell asleep again. Quinton woke up shortly thereafter and also decided to hide a third of the remaining oranges and he also went back to sleep. Finally, Ronald woke up and seeing the others were asleep, took a third of what was left. Of course, none of them knew of the other's antics. So, in the morning, they shared the remaining oranges, each receiving sixteen. 

How many oranges were in the crate originally?"
