THE 298 DIVISION
PROBLEM - ANSWER
Age group: All
Here is the answer to the 298 division problem which I had posted on my blog earlier!
The question was:
"Rohan's grandfather gave him exactly Rs 298. He then said, 'This amount will be yours if you do as I ask.' 'What do you want me to do?', Rohan asked. 'Simply this. Divide the amount, in whole rupee increments, into a number of bags so that I can ask for any amount between Re 1 and Rs 298, and you can give me the proper amount by giving me a certain number of these bags without opening and taking partially from them.'
What is the minimum number of bags Rohan will require?"

Now coming to the Answer!
Simply divide it as follows:
1,2,4,8,16,64,128 which is equal to 255. The last bag can have the remaining 43 coins. If asked for coins lesser than or equal to 255, Rohan can use the first 8 bags. If asked for more than 255 coins, use the last bag along with the combination of the first 8 bags.
Therefore, there will be a total of 9 bags.
Eg:
127 = 1+2+4+8+16+32+64
256 = 43+128+85 = 43+128+64+16+4+1
